The Group of Seven painters started up in Ontario back in the 1920s, and painted such scenes as this. They were determined to create a truly distinctive art, and it was the dynamic Canadian landscape that inspired them. They viewed the Canadian forest as a transcendent, spiritual place.
When the Group began, every member lived in Toronto, close to the Don Valley or the Rideau River. Visual splendour was close at hand a hundred years ago, and still is today within and near the city.
