The city of Nuremberg in Germany dates back to the 11th century, and is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the country. Though many of its buildings were destroyed by bombing in the Second World War, much has been rebuilt. Talented sculptors have recreated to the last detail many of the statues designed and carved by sculptors in the 17th century. It’s difficult to determine what is old from what is new, so attentive to detail were the artists of yesterday and today.
This medieval warrior/ Emperor displays many of the features of classical works: the sword in the right hand representing political and military power, the globe in the left symbolizing the spread of Christianity, and the tamed lion at his feet demonstrating majesty.
