We discovered this one while walking about in the town of Paihia, known as “The Jewel of the Bay Islands”.
Native to South Africa, the plant was brought to New Zealand in the 19th century and botanists soon discovered it was well suited to the temperate climate of the North Island. The Bird of Paradise can grow as high as thirty feet. Its dramatic colours and shapes are said to resemble a bird in flight, hence the name.
