Created in 2004 by the provocative Czech artist, David Cerny, and symbolically constructed in the courtyard of the Franz Kafka Museum in the Little Corner of Prague, these two bronze statues are both controversial and entertaining. They are urinating into a basin shaped like the Czech Republic, as ironic commentary on the absurdities of political life. The swivelling statues are programmed to write out satiric messages in the basin by way of their urinating streams.
Visitors can even send their own text message for the bronze pundits to write, via a posted telephone number. No doubt that Kafka, the author of such brilliant novels as “The Castle”, “The Trial”, and “Metamorphosis” would be pleased to observe Cerny’s metaphorical inventions.
