In the heart of Winnipeg’s celebrated Assiniboine Park there is an entire garden dedicated to the sculpture of famed artist Leo Mol. Educated in Leningrad and Berlin, he moved to Canada in 1948 and settled in Winnipeg.
Not only a gifted sculptor in bronze and stone, he was equally talented at ceramics, landscape painting, and stained glass. His work is found in major museums throughout the world. His commitment to public art resulted in the donation of the 300 pieces in the Sculpture Garden that was named in his honour.
Europa is one of the many highlights of his work in bronze. It recreates the Greek myth of the Phoenician princess abducted by Zeus, as he takes on the shape of a bull and carries the princess to Crete. For many, this sculpture symbolizes the birth of Europe and its shared classical heritage.
