The Maze in the VanDusen Botanical Garden was created with more than 3000 pyramidal cedar trees. This is one of only six such mazes in all of North America. It’s an adventure to enter and find one’s way through the twists, turns and dead-ends encountered.
The creation of mazes goes back several centuries. The best known of historical mazes is the labyrinth beneath the Palace of Knossos on the island of Crete, where the Greek hero Theseus slayed the Minotaur.
A maze was often an integral element of monastery life, as the experience was long considered to be an avenue for meditation. As for the Minotaur, they are seldom found these days, and one usually encounters only fellow travellers in the search for the one and only exit.
