Chop Wood, Carry Water: A Zen Story

“What shall I do to gain satori”: asked the earnest traveller seeking advice from a Zen Master.

The farmhouse had recently been slated for demolition. I drove out to take a few pictures and failed to observe the No Trespassing sign.

Taking a photograph has been described as “the capture of a moment in time”, but it is much more than that.

There are thousands of pictures of sunflowers taken every year by photographers. Most display the sunflower in full magnificent yellow bloom.

What Ansel Adams valued in his photos of the wilderness, he said, was “a mystique: a valid, intangible, non-materialistic experience.”
