Photography: The Road To Memory

Taking a photograph has been described as “the capture of a moment in time”, but it is much more than that.

A photographer soon learns that his own visual focus is far different than the actual photographic focus on the film.

What Ansel Adams valued in his photos of the wilderness, he said, was “a mystique: a valid, intangible, non-materialistic experience.”

With this image I was consciously striving for a photograph that resembled something my talented younger brother would have painted.

The angle in this image, from the extreme left side, allowed the capture of all this partial detail, revealing a sense of depth.
