Revisiting the haunts of my teenage years made me recall my part-time job in high school – delivering prescriptions, cigarettes and Cokes on my bicycle. Dogs chased me, customers cheated me, and I got to know the seedy side of town. But it paid 60 cents per hour, and that was decent money for a kid back in 1963 when the going adult wage was $1.00 an hour.
This was a party house at the time, judging by the frequency of their delivery orders from Norgold Pharmacy. And those deliveries of Rothman’s filter-tips and Canada Dry Ginger Ale indicated strongly that the residents were quite healthy. Best of all, the scantily-glad woman who often answered the door gave good tips.
