Taken at The Forks, which is the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers in downtown Winnipeg. The area was long considered to be a sacred place for gatherings of the Indigenous peoples.
The image is of a 3-meter-tall sculpture that was designed and created by a local Metis artist named Jaimie Isaac. It is intended to represent the 8 fires and 8 timelines in an ancient prophecy that predicted the coming of the white man to the territory.
Each chevron implies movement, and symbolizes the forces of wind, water and fire.
The seventh fire ignites the eighth, bringing peace, love and survival. The sculpture is strategically placed to gather the rays of the sun in the late afternoon.
