Painters such as Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh created their paintings of floral gardens as expressions of nature’s perfection, harmony and beauty. Gustave Klimt went beyond that concept to demonstrate that paintings of flowers could achieve high stylization. The camera has further transformed the relationship between the wild and the cultivated landscapes. Through the vast range of images from photographers such as Edward Steichen, Imogen Cunningham, Stephen Shore, Robert Mapplethorpe, Nobuyoshi Araki, and Collier Schorr, flowers have inspired art at the highest level.
Photographing flowers is both simple and sophisticated. There is no evidence of modern life in the image above, no trace of macro close-ups, blurring of the background, or simulation of filmic effects. The viewer is invited simply to contemplate the splendour.
