I went to a classic car show and spotted this beauty – a 1959 Dodge Custom Royal Convertible. The late ‘50s and early ’60s were glorious years for automobile design.
Dual headlights, swooping tailfins and gorgeous two-tone paint jobs. The Chrysler Imperial, the Cadillac, the Lincoln, the Mercury, the Impala, the Parisienne, and the Dodge each displayed these design features, but with a distinct look that defined the brand. Every car fan could tell you the vehicle make, model and year of manufacture merely from a quick glance at the headlights or the taillights.
Cars rusted out quickly in the East, where the heavy use of salt in the winter ate away at fenders.
You can still see countless classics on the streets of Victoria or White Rock, though their Collector license plates limit them to seasonal driving. Here on the West Coast, a 1959 Dodge Custom Royal two-tone convertible will last a hundred years.
