Tonal variety, textures, shapes, and compositional possibilities called for close-up focus and black and white film. Ice crystals enhance the shape of leaves that had not succumbed to decay, suggesting a sudden change in the weather. It’s only for a moment or two, and then the morning sun would melt away all that has been captured here. Photography is always about capturing the moment, but even a happy accident involves some conscious craftsmanship.
