Where Gravity Is Optional

The Arbutus tree with its naturally occurring peeling bark is one of the most unusual of all trees. It only grows near the ocean, often on a rocky cliffside and has a long-life span – as much as 400 years. It’s almost indestructible, being resistant to both wind, fire and drought. The dense hardwood is treasured for its durability.

The colourful red bark peels annually and has long been used by indigenous peoples as a medicine source. As the tree ages, the colours underneath the bark transform to a rich palette of green, gray, silver, and yellow.

In British Columbia it is illegal to cut, prune or remove an Arbutus tree.

They’re evergreen but deciduous. Twisted but elegant. Growing out of storm-battered cliffs like “Hey, gravity is optional.” ~  Lori Morris
